Your Rim's Got a Crack. We Fix It — At Your Door.

A cracked rim doesn’t shout at you — it whispers. Slow punctures, steering wobble, tyre that just won’t stay inflated. HN Mobile Tyres has been reading those whispers across Manchester for over 15 years. No garage trip, no tow truck, no drama.

Driving on a cracked rim right now? — Don't risk a blowout on the M60 or A57. Pull over safely and call us.

The Cause

So... how does a rim even crack?

Manchester roads are genuinely rough in spots — the potholes on the A56 and unexpected speed bumps can slowly damage your wheels. Rim cracks rarely happen in one moment; they often develop gradually. If the tyre begins losing air or the wheel feels unstable, our mobile tyre fitting in Manchester service can come to you and safely inspect and refit the wheel on the spot.

rim crack repair

Pothole impact (the big one)

Hit a deep pothole at even 30mph and the force transferred to your wheel is enormous. Alloy rims are strong but not indestructible. One bad hit on an unlit road at night — that’s often all it takes. Greater Manchester has some of the UK’s worst pothole complaints, which means your rims take a beating just from normal daily driving.

Kerb strikes & tight parking

That small clunk when you misjudge a parking space or clip a raised kerb — most people think nothing of it. But the inner barrel of the rim, hidden behind the tyre, can develop a hairline crack from exactly this kind of low-speed impact. You wouldn’t even see it without taking the tyre off.

Metal fatigue over time

Older vehicles or rims that have been on the road for years accumulate micro-stress from thousands of road vibrations. The crack doesn’t come from one event — it builds up invisibly over time until something gives.

Running on low tyre pressure

When tyre pressure is low, the cushion between the rim and the road is reduced. The rim itself starts absorbing impacts it was never designed to handle directly. Consistent low pressure is one of the most underestimated rim killers out there.

Poor quality or counterfeit alloys

Budget replacement rims or unverified second-hand wheels can have casting defects or thinner walls than OEM spec. They crack far more easily and the damage spreads faster. This is one of those secrets of the trade that most customers don’t hear until it’s already a problem.

What's Actually at Risk

Here's what most drivers don't realise

A cracked rim is one of those problems that looks minor on the surface but has a sneaky way of becoming a genuine safety hazard — fast.

Sudden tyre blowout

A crack that’s been spreading can give way without warning — especially at speed on the motorway. A blowout at 60+ mph is an entirely different animal to a slow puncture on a quiet street. It can cause you to lose control instantly.

Compromised vehicle handling

Even a partial crack affects wheel geometry. You might feel it as a vibration through the steering wheel, pulling to one side, or an odd wobble at certain speeds. Drivers often put this down to wheel balance or tyre wear — and the crack gets ignored for months.

Automatic MOT failure

A cracked wheel is a DVSA-recognised safety defect. If an examiner spots it, that’s an immediate fail — not just an advisory. Fixing it after the fact means rebooking, paying again, and the stress of sorting it under time pressure.

Tyre damage keeps compounding

A cracked rim doesn’t hold the tyre bead properly. Air keeps escaping, the tyre wears unevenly, and you can end up replacing tyres repeatedly without fixing the root cause. We’ve seen customers spend hundreds on tyres before anyone spotted the cracked rim underneath.

Insurance and liability issues

If a cracked rim contributes to an accident and it’s discovered that the defect was pre-existing, your insurer may not be sympathetic. In road traffic incidents, the mechanical condition of your vehicle matters.

You often can't see it yourself

The most common type of rim crack — on the inner barrel — is completely hidden behind the mounted tyre. You can stare at your wheel all day and never spot it. It takes removing the tyre to find it. That’s why regular checks by someone who knows what to look for matter.

THE REPAIR PROCESS

How we actually fix a cracked rim

No guesswork. No covering it up. Here’s exactly what happens when HN Mobile Tyres shows up at your location.

On-site assessment (15–20 min)

We come to wherever your car is. The tyre is removed and the rim is inspected under proper lighting. We’re checking crack type, location, length, and whether it extends into a stress zone that would make repair unsafe. This isn’t rushed — it’s the most important step.

Crack cleaning and preparation (10–15 min)

The crack area is cleaned back to bare metal — any coating, grime or oxidation that could compromise the repair is removed. Prep work is where shortcuts often get taken by less experienced technicians. We don’t take shortcuts here.

Structural repair (20–40 min)

Depending on crack type and location, the repair uses specialist TIG welding or industrial-grade bonding compounds rated for wheel load tolerances. The goal is full structural restoration — not cosmetic hiding. We check the repair against the original wheel geometry.

Pressure test and remounting (15–20 min)

Before the tyre goes back on, the repaired rim is pressure-tested to confirm the seal is complete and there’s no air loss. The tyre is remounted, balanced, and inflated to correct pressure. You get a full functional safety check before we leave.

Honest sign-off (5 min)

If the crack is in a position where repair cannot restore safe structural integrity, we’ll tell you. Some cracks can’t be safely fixed. We’d rather give you that honest answer than send you away with a rim that isn’t safe. That’s the 10-year reputation talking.

💷 What does rim crack repair cost?

Most repairs fall in the £60–£150 range. Simpler surface cracks sit at the lower end; more complex structural repairs or cosmetic finishing at the higher end. We always quote before we start — no surprises on the invoice. Compare that to a new alloy wheel (£150–£400+) or the cost of repeated tyre replacements caused by an unresolved crack.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Things people actually ask us

How do I know if my rim is cracked?
A slow tyre deflation that keeps coming back even after it’s been refilled is the most common clue. Steering wheel vibration, a subtle pull to one side, or a tyre that never seems to sit quite right are also worth getting checked. The tricky part is that many rim cracks hide on the inner barrel — completely invisible without removing the tyre. If you’ve got any of those symptoms and no obvious cause, it’s worth a look.

Yes — and the risk scales with speed. A crack that’s manageable at low urban speeds can catastrophically fail at motorway speeds. Manchester’s M60 is not where you want a tyre blowout from a cracked rim. It’s also an automatic MOT failure if spotted by an examiner, and can complicate insurance claims after an accident if the defect was pre-existing.

No — and we’ll tell you honestly if that’s the case. Cracks in certain high-stress areas (near lug holes, across the spoke base) or cracks that have spread significantly may not be safely repairable. If we can’t do it safely, we’ll advise on replacement options and won’t take your money for a fix that won’t hold. That honesty is something we’re known for.

Most jobs are done in 60–90 minutes on-site. More complex fractures or cracks that need cosmetic finishing as well as structural repair can take a bit longer. We always give you a realistic time estimate before starting.

A properly executed structural repair — done to the wheel’s load-bearing specification — can meet MOT standards. We repair to DVSA safety guidelines. However, not every crack can be repaired to that standard, and in those cases we’ll tell you to replace rather than risk a failed test or worse.

Yes. Alloys are more common and the repair methods differ slightly from steel wheels, but we work with both. Alloy cracks can sometimes be more complex because of the casting structure of the metal, but we have the equipment and experience for both types.

Most repairs fall in the £60–£150 range. Simpler surface cracks at the lower end, more complex structural repairs or cosmetic finishing at the higher end. We quote before we start — always. No surprises on the invoice.

Don't wait for a blowout to take this seriously.

Rim cracks are fixable. They’re also completely predictable in terms of where they lead if you ignore them. HN Mobile Tyres is a phone call away — and we’ll come to you.
